MOTIVATION

Depression is a condition I enjoy working with.

I don’t think of it mainly as sadness (although there may be some sadness there, of course), but rather a stuckness.
It can feel as if there is no benefit in going in any direction, so why would you turn left or right, forward or back?

Depression usually has a beginning but no end. Babies are not born depressed. At some point in your life, you might have experienced events which made you feel that progress was impossible, and that feeling has more or less remained ever since, or has gone and returned.

What we have to do is reverse the feeling of pointlessness, and help your brain to understand that the past is over. There are some forms of depression which may be due mainly to a chemical imbalance or other physical factors, but by the time clients come to me, they have usually either had that possibly addressed through medication (with better or worse results). In other cases, they know perfectly well what caused it but need help changing it.

Motivation is the mirror image of depression.

t is the push that gets you started moving in a particular direction, towards something or away from something. Young children usually have little problem in going for they want, even the impossible!

As adults, we are often held back by fear or expectation of failure, based on past experiences.

Clients come to me asking for motivation, whereas what they really want is to have finished doing something they don’t want to do, which is of course different.

We have ways of working with that, because taking the action is more important than having the motivation.

Also, most of the things which are difficult to accomplish require sustained, repeated action over a period of time, so a burst of motivation which lasts a week of two is not going to get you there.

Just after two sessions I feel like me again

I cannot begin to thank you enough for how much better I feel. The last nine months have been the saddest and darkest period in my life, when the arrival of a baby is supposed to be exciting and joyous. I was riddled with anxiety and insomnia and after just two sessions with you I feel like me again. I have started to enjoy life and appreciate my beautiful baby boy for who he really is. Post natal depression is an awful illness and if you have lived with it for months on end hoping it'll get better I would whole heartedly recommend that seeing Jack will help. I was desperate but refused to take anti depressants as I never suffered with low mood, depression or anxiety prior to having a baby. I couldn't sleep, felt hungry all of the time and ruminated on the same negative thoughts. I felt as if I was drowning. I had fourteen sessions of CBT which helped to a point but it didn't address my emotions. Those feelings of guilt, regret and loss of time. I was amazed at how quickly I felt better. Jack made me feel relaxed, listened to my fears and anxieties made me laugh as he helped me to understand that I can regain control. With only six weeks until my baby boy is a year old I can see that times ahead with be filled with love and laughter. And accept the past as the beginning of this journey, just a tiny fraction of what's ahead for my beautiful family. A million thank yous again!
