If you come to me to deal with any unwanted or compulsive habits, I will first look to what is causing them, or caused them in the first place.

 

In some cases, working on this by itself is enough to get rid of the behaviour completely. However, what we often need to do is work on the habit itself as well, because your brain deals with things you do repeatedly in such a way that it becomes automatic.

 

You might be one of those people where the original reason for starting the behaviour is no longer relevant, for example starting smoking in your teens because your friends were doing it. In those sorts of cases, working on the reasons for it don’t change the habit.

 

However, in principle I look at why you are doing what you do. It differs from person to person, so I treat each case individually.

 

Often, with issues like binge drinking, there is a need to push away painful events from the past. As with most other issues, I tend to work with you for 2-4 sessions, and I work as quickly as I can. We need to see the results of a session and work on whatever is left to do.

 

There is no benefit in just changing a habit which has a function in your life without addressing the other factors around it.

 

I would rather do a proper job for you and address everything which needs to be done than just do something rapid and temporary.

 

Having said that, you might be one of those few lucky people who do only need a single session, but don't expect it. I would prefer you to come with an open mind, prepared for it to take as long as it takes.
